CHAPTER EIGHT

By the next week, Kade was back to work, and Meg felt like she was making progress in her new job. The accounts were up-to-date, and she was actually beginning to understand the filing system for all the huge vendor binders.

Today, she sat cross-legged on the floor beside the shelf of binders, a stack of pre-sorted pages sitting beside her. Izzy decided she belonged to him this morning and he curled up in the cradle of her lap.

Absently petting his head, Meg studied the page in her hand. Highmark. Several unusual styles of furniture covered the page. Interesting. Did people actually buy these designs? They must, or Laurel wouldn’t carry them.

She leaned forward to snag the book off the shelf and spread it open before her. Izzy twitched at the movement, but didn’t budge. Silly cat. With a smile, Meg searched the tabs until she found the one she needed for this product. Replacing the old page with the new one only took moments.

She eyed the stack beside her and picked up the next new insert for this vendor. With luck, she’d finish filing all these today.

Laurel burst into the shop, a wave of kinetic energy in her wake. “You don’t need to sit on the floor. I do have chairs. I have lots of chairs.”

“This works for me.” Meg smiled at her. “How did the meeting go?”

“Wonderfully.” Laurel dropped her briefcase on a nearby chair. “We have a new contract.”

“Is this for the doctor’s office?”

“Yep, for his waiting room. He wants me to check out a new style of chair, though.” Laurel paused. “Can I ask you a huge favor?”

“Of course.” Laurel had quickly become a good friend as well as Meg’s employer. Meg would gladly help her out.

“You don’t know what it is yet.” Laurel settled on the edge of the desk. “I need to go to Dallas for two to three days. Could Matt and Izzy stay with you while I’m gone?”

“That’s fine.” Meg stroked Izzy’s head. “Matt’s a great kid and Izzy is...well, Izzy.”

“Exactly. I figured Matt could walk to school with Riley, and you can still bring Izzy into the office.”

“That works.” Riley would be thrilled to have his friend over. “When do you leave?”

Laurel winced. “Tomorrow?”

“Okay. It’s not a problem. Matt can come home from school with Riley tomorrow with his things and I’ll take Izzy home tonight.” She’d alert Riley tonight.

“You are a lifesaver. I owe you one.” Laurel bounced up from the desk. “I need to finalize the rest of this while I remember it.” She disappeared into the back before Meg could respond.

Returning to the binders, Meg smiled. The woman never stayed still for long. At least, not that Meg had seen.

Izzy stretched out with a wide yawn, extending over Meg’s lap. She ruffled his belly. “You have no idea what you’re in for.”

Once she arrived home that night, she set the cat carrier down at the edge of the living room and opened the door to it. Izzy poked his nose out, his eyes wary.
